Investment casting and permanent mold casting approach repeat production differently. One creates a new refractory mold for each casting cycle; the other repeatedly uses a metal mold. That distinction affects the geometry that can be released, the thermal behavior of the mold and the investment made before production begins.
Ask how the component leaves the mold
An investment casting shell is removed after solidification. A permanent mold must open and release the component, with cores or additional mechanisms where appropriate. Features that obstruct withdrawal therefore deserve attention early in the permanent-mold design review.
This does not mean every undercut automatically excludes a reusable mold. It means the proposed solution should identify how the shape is produced and released. The cost of that solution belongs in the comparison, alongside the cost of making an expendable shell.
Keep the alloy decision connected to the process
Permanent mold routes are commonly associated with nonferrous castings, while investment casting is used across a different range of alloy requirements. The suitability of a specific mold and process must be confirmed for the selected alloy. General statements about casting should not replace that check.
If a supplier proposes changing the alloy to suit a preferred route, assess the service requirements separately. A lower process cost does not establish equivalent corrosion resistance, heat-treatment response or mechanical performance.
Repeatability depends on more than reusing a tool
A permanent mold provides a reusable cavity, but mold preparation and thermal control still affect production. Investment casting repeats the pattern and shell sequence, introducing its own controls. The American Foundry Society identifies preparation, filling, solidification and ejection as distinct stages of the permanent mold process.
For a real component, compare sample evidence and the proposed control plan. The question is whether critical features remain acceptable across production, not whether a process description uses the word repeatable.
Put future revisions into the commercial comparison
Stable repeat demand may support a larger tooling commitment. Frequent geometry changes can alter that calculation. Ask how a revised boss, passage or interface would affect the tool and subsequent qualification.
